My student Lauren Anders is doing an independent study on Jeremiah. The focus of her work is to study Jeremiah’s six laments and discover how the laments apply to the task of the ministry. One of the requirements for the course was to read and write a review of Terence E. Fretheim’s book Jeremiah (Macon: Smith & Helwys, 2002).
Read Lauren’s review.

Catholic Charities and Adoptions
A judge in Illinois ruled that Catholic Charities should lose its license with the State of Illinois to be a provider of foster care and adoption services. The reason for the judge’s decision is because Catholic Charities accept public funds but violates the state’s anti-discrimination laws. Should Christians receive money from the state?

Solomon Becomes King
In today’s post I continue my study of the struggle for David’s throne. After Adonijah made an effort to become the king of Israel a few years before the death of his father David, David reacted forcefully and made Solomon the successor to the throne. The post deal with Nathan’s political maneuver that brought Solomon to the throne.

The Bible, America, and a Just Society
You must watch a great video that describes how Moses predicted that the Gentile world would see what Jews sometimes do not see: that a free and just society is based on the law of God. A great video.

Adonijah and the Struggle for David’s Throne
Adonijah was the oldest living son of David, He believed that he was the rightful heir to the throne. The Bible says that David “was old and advanced in years; and although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm.” But It was Solomon who became king after David.
My post today deals with the struggle for David’s throne.

The Tribes of Yahweh
Norman Gottwald has written an interesting article in which he evaluates the impact of his opus magnum, The Tribes of Yahweh.
In this article, published some time ago, Gottwald reviews the contribution The Tribes of Yahweh has made to biblical studies and the impact of the book in promoting the social scientific study of the Hebrew Bible.
As always, Gottwald challenges his readers to look at ancient Israel from a different perspective. This article is no different.

Rape in the Hebrew Bible.
Most people avoid talking about rape because it is a traumatizing experience for those involved in non-consensual sexual intercourse. Rape is also a frightening experience because the perpetrators may use force or violence against their victims. In today’s society, unwanted sexual assault happens to both men and women of any age.
My post today deal with “Rape in the Hebrew Bible.”
